Beachgoers along Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast are being warned of a high risk of dangerous rip currents this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a rip current statement for the coasts of Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties through Saturday evening, according to Gulf Coast News meteorologist Rob Duns.
Rip currents are narrow, fast-moving channels of water that can pull swimmers away from shore and can overpower even strong swimmers. Gulf Coast News said swimming in the Gulf is not advised during the risk period.
A high surf advisory is also in effect along the Lee and Charlotte county coasts, adding another hazard for visitors and residents headed to area beaches.
