At Walt Disney World Resort, the room category you reserve matters—but the exact room you receive is assigned closer to arrival. That distinction is especially important for families booking two rooms, travelers with a must-have bedding preference, and anyone hoping for a particular building, floor or view direction.
Disney’s published terms are clear: connecting rooms, adjacent rooms, specific locations and types of bedding are requests only, handled based on availability at check-in. In other words, submitting the request early is smart, but it does not turn it into a guarantee. Check current details before you go, since online check-in choices and resort procedures can change.
What your reservation does secure
Your confirmed booking secures the resort, travel dates and room category shown on the reservation, subject to Disney’s overall terms. If a particular feature is essential, reserve the room category that includes it rather than treating it as a note. For example, pay attention to whether you are selecting a standard versus preferred location category, a Club Level room, a villa, or a room type advertised with a certain sleeping arrangement.
That said, Disney’s terms specifically list “types of rooms or bedding” among the items that remain request-based. Don’t assume that choosing a general category guarantees a particular room number, building, floor, proximity to transportation, or every detail of its bed setup.
Connecting rooms versus nearby rooms
These are not interchangeable. Connecting rooms have an interior door between the two guest rooms. Adjacent, adjoining or nearby rooms generally means rooms placed close together, but without a promise of that interior doorway. When the connecting door is important—for parents with children staying in the second room, for instance—use the words “connecting rooms” every time you make or repeat the request.
Book both rooms first, then contact Disney Resort Hotel Reservations to have the connecting-room request noted. Have both confirmation numbers ready, and be clear about which adults and children are assigned to each room. You can also repeat the preference during online check-in. If sharing a door is not essential, telling Disney that nearby rooms would also work gives the room-assignment team more flexibility.
How to make a useful location request
Online check-in in My Disney Experience typically offers a small menu of location preferences, such as a higher floor, near an elevator, or nearer a transportation stop. Choose the one that matters most rather than selecting competing wishes. “Near transportation” and “quiet upper floor,” for example, may point to very different room areas at a sprawling resort.
For a more detailed request—such as a particular building, a ground-floor room, a room near a specific pool, or two reservations close together—call Disney Resort Hotel Reservations or use the My Disney Experience app’s chat feature to ask that the note be added. State one primary need first, then one acceptable fallback. A short, practical note is more useful than a long list of ideal room numbers.

How online check-in and Direct-to-Room change the process
Online check-in lets Disney Resort hotel guests share an approximate arrival time, add eligible preference selections and set up a payment card before arrival. It is convenient, but it is not an early room-selection tool. A request made there remains a request, and the room is still assigned according to availability.
With Direct-to-Room service, the My Disney Experience app sends a room-ready update with your room number and arrival instructions; you can then unlock the door with the app or an active Disney Band. Most Disney Resort hotels list a 3 p.m. check-in time, while Disney Deluxe Villas list 4 p.m., though a room can be ready earlier or later.
Direct-to-Room does not lock you out of help. If the room assignment does not meet an important request, visit the Front Desk or use the app to contact the resort as soon as possible. A Cast Member can check whether another suitable room is available, but a switch is not assured—and waiting for a different room may mean waiting longer for it to be ready.
The practical strategy
Make your priority known more than once: note it when booking or by phone, repeat it in online check-in, and politely ask at the Front Desk if it was not met. But build your plans around the room category you actually reserved, not a preferred building or connecting-door promise. For travel with children or anyone who truly needs a specific accessible feature, discuss the need directly with Disney before arrival rather than relying on a general room request.
Bottom line: Reserve the category you can live with, make one clear request early, and treat any more specific placement as welcome pixie dust—not a contractual guarantee.
