Passengers boarding Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas at Port Canaveral on a recent Tuesday expected to set sail by 3 PM for a four-day trip to Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas. Instead, they found themselves waiting at the dock for nearly 12 hours while the ship's engineering crew worked through the night to resolve an undisclosed mechanical issue.
The captain announced a revised departure of 6 PM, but the ship remained docked well past that mark. A second update pushed the time back further, and Utopia of the Seas ultimately didn't leave the pier until around 2:50 AM. Passengers kept tabs on the situation through Royal Caribbean Facebook groups and Reddit threads, sharing updates and — for many — a good-humored take on the extended wait.
Because the late departure made the original 7 AM CocoCay arrival impossible, the crew rewrote the schedule on the fly. Tuesday became an at-sea day, Nassau was added for Thursday, and CocoCay was shifted to later in the voyage — essentially running the itinerary in reverse. The changes also had a ripple effect on Wonder of the Seas, which shares some of the same port stops and had to adjust its own schedule as a result.
Despite the disruption, most guests reported staying in good spirits, making use of the ship's onboard amenities and entertainment while at the dock. Cruise Director Marc Walker reassured passengers with a post in the ship's official Facebook group, promising sunshine ahead. Royal Caribbean fans noted that the cruise line moved quickly to find workable alternatives and ensure guests didn't lose their CocoCay day entirely.
