John Padgett, the former Disney executive credited with steering development of MagicBand, has launched Spaxial, a technology venture developing an “experiential artificial intelligence platform” for destinations such as theme parks.

MagicBand debuted in 2013 as part of Disney’s $1 billion technology investment. The RFID wristbands can be used for tasks including unlocking Disney resort rooms, entering parks, redeeming line-skipping access and making purchases. Padgett also helped pioneer Disney’s MyMagic+ infrastructure, FastPass+ and RFID-enabled service at Magic Kingdom’s Be Our Guest Restaurant, according to Disney Fanatic.

Spaxial’s proposed system would instead use an ambient network of connected technology across a destination. The company describes three parts of the platform: permission-based guest recognition, spatial tracking of guest movement and venue conditions, and AI that combines preferences, itinerary history and operating information.

Padgett told Forbes that Spaxial is focused on improving service delivery in front of guests rather than using AI chiefly for back-office cost savings. The system is intended to give employees relevant guest context, such as a food allergy, celebration or a recent ride delay, while reducing the need for guests to scan credentials or use a dedicated wearable.

There is no indication that Walt Disney World or other Disney Parks will adopt Spaxial. Disney continues to use MagicBand+ and its My Disney Experience ecosystem, while Spaxial is being developed as an independent platform.

Padgett previously led development of Princess Cruises’ OceanMedallion, a wearable device used for functions including approaching stateroom access and location-based service aboard ships. His new venture is intended to move beyond wearables altogether, though no deployment date or confirmed theme-park client was included in the report.
