If you've ever balanced a plate of escargot on top of an EPCOT trash can during the Food & Wine Festival, your days of doing that are numbered — but Disney has a replacement ready. Walt Disney World has been swapping out its familiar flat-top waste bins for a redesigned version featuring a foot-pedal opening, internal compactors, and a rounded solar panel lid. The rounded tops are far less friendly to impromptu snack stops, and regular EPCOT visitors noticed the problem right away.

Disney's answer arrived on August 20, when a wooden counter was spotted installed along a railing in the Germany World Showcase Pavilion. The counter has a raised back edge to keep items from tumbling into the flowerbeds, and it comes with a "no seating" sign — though how strictly guests will follow that is another matter. More of these temporary countertops are expected to appear around the World Showcase before the festival gets underway.

The timing matters because the 30th annual EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival opens on August 27, 2026, and runs through November 21. To mark the milestone anniversary, Walt Disney World is bringing back or reimagining 30 fan-favorite menu items from festivals past. The full lineup of Global Marketplaces has already been announced, though specific menu items and availability can change.

Whether railing counters become a permanent fixture or disappear after the festival wraps up in November remains to be seen, but for now they offer a practical — if slightly more structured — spot to enjoy small bites from the World Showcase without hunting for a flat surface. If you're planning a visit, you can save on Walt Disney World tickets before you go.
