The Walt Disney World Monorail is more than a nostalgic ride above the lagoon: used strategically, it is one of the simplest ways to move between Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and three deluxe resorts. It is complimentary, with no separate fare to board. You will, of course, need valid admission for any park you plan to enter. Before departure day, it is smart to have your Disney World tickets and park plans sorted so transportation is the easy part.
The three Disney World monorail routes
- Resort Monorail: This local loop serves Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC), Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. From Magic Kingdom, the usual stop order is Contemporary, TTC, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, then back to Magic Kingdom.
- Express Monorail: This is the non-stop link between the TTC and Magic Kingdom. It is the right train for drivers heading from the Magic Kingdom parking area to the park entrance, and for the return trip at day’s end.
- EPCOT Monorail: This line runs directly between the TTC and EPCOT. It is the monorail’s only connection to EPCOT, so anyone coming from Magic Kingdom or a monorail resort will transfer at the TTC.
The system is not a loop connecting every Disney park. There is no monorail to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs or the Skyliner resorts. For those destinations, a bus, boat, Skyliner or another connection will usually be the better plan.
How the TTC transfer works
Think of the TTC as the monorail system’s switchboard. It is the arrival point for Magic Kingdom parking and the place where all three lines meet. If you are traveling from Magic Kingdom to EPCOT, take the Express Monorail or Resort Monorail to the TTC, then follow the signs to the EPCOT platform. Coming from EPCOT to Magic Kingdom, get off at the TTC and change to the Express Monorail for the most direct trip.
From the three monorail resorts to EPCOT, ride the Resort Monorail to the TTC, then transfer to the EPCOT line. From EPCOT to a resort, reverse that process. Give yourself a little cushion for the platform walk and the wait for the next train—especially around park opening, fireworks and closing. If you are park hopping, make sure your ticket and same-day park-entry plans permit entry to your next park.
2026 monorail operating hours
Disney currently schedules the Resort and Express monorails to begin operating 30 minutes before Magic Kingdom opens and to stop one hour after Magic Kingdom closes. The EPCOT Monorail begins 30 minutes before EPCOT opens and runs until two hours after EPCOT closes. Those windows are tied to each park’s daily calendar, not one fixed clock time.
That later EPCOT end time can be useful after an evening in World Showcase, but it does not mean every onward connection will be running just as late. Check the My Disney Experience app, transportation signs and a Cast Member’s guidance on the day of travel. Hours, train availability and routing can change for weather, special events, maintenance or operational needs.

When the monorail is genuinely faster
- TTC to Magic Kingdom: Choose the Express Monorail when its queue is reasonable. It skips the resort stops, making it the cleanest route from the parking area to the park.
- TTC to EPCOT: The EPCOT Monorail is the direct option and is generally much more sensible than trying to piece together buses.
- Grand Floridian to Magic Kingdom: The Resort Monorail is especially convenient here because Magic Kingdom is the next stop after Grand Floridian.
- Resort-to-resort dining along the loop: It is handy for moving among Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian without dealing with a car or a bus transfer.
When walking or buses can win
Do not treat the monorail as automatically fastest simply because it is overhead. From Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the paved walk to Magic Kingdom is often the most predictable option, particularly when you can see a long platform queue. The Resort Monorail must continue through the TTC, Polynesian and Grand Floridian before returning to Magic Kingdom from Contemporary.
Likewise, guests at resorts that are not on the monorail loop should normally take their direct bus to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT rather than detouring to the TTC for a train transfer. A direct bus may feel less glamorous, but it avoids an extra connection. At Polynesian, compare the Resort Monorail line with a walk to the nearby TTC and the Express line if your goal is Magic Kingdom; the better choice depends on wait times.
For a smoother ride, avoid glass containers, which are not permitted aboard. Guests using wheelchairs or ECVs can access monorail stations through available ramps or elevators, and medical strollers are handled as wheelchairs. Bottom line: use the monorail for direct TTC trips and the three-resort loop, but always choose the route with the fewest stops, transfers and visible queues.
