Travelers booked on Serenade of the Seas' August 30 Alaska cruise are facing a significant shake-up. A propulsion system problem has forced the ship to stay in Vancouver for additional maintenance, pushing the departure back two full days to Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 9:00 p.m.

The itinerary took a major hit along with the timeline. What was originally a seven-night voyage calling at Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan has been trimmed to just two port stops — Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The scenic glacier cruising day has also been dropped, with guests instead spending much of the trip sailing the Inside Passage.

Royal Caribbean is offering affected guests a layered compensation package. Those who stay with the cruise will receive a refundable onboard credit equal to two days of their paid fare, plus a Future Cruise Credit for the same amount. The line will also cover hotel costs up to $300 per stateroom per night for August 30 and 31, and reimburse air change fees up to $200 for domestic flights and $400 for international ones. Guests can board early on Monday or Tuesday (check-in runs 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day), though anyone who boards must remain on the ship due to immigration rules, and onboard shops and the casino will stay closed while docked.

Passengers who prefer to cancel altogether can receive a full refund to their original payment method within 14 business days, plus a 25% Future Cruise Credit good on any Royal Caribbean sailing departing by September 1, 2027. This isn't Serenade's first brush with Vancouver repair delays — the ship experienced engine trouble on a July 2026 Alaska departure as well, and passengers on prior sailings reported maintenance-related itinerary changes. Some frustrated guests on social media have said they'd think twice before booking the vessel again.

Serenade of the Seas is a 2003-built Radiance Class ship carrying around 2,143 passengers. After her Alaska season wraps up in September 2026, she'll reposition to San Diego for Mexican Riviera and Baja California sailings before returning to Alaska in May 2027.
