Just a couple of years ago, Creek Ranch was private land on the verge of becoming a residential development. Today, the 1,342-acre central Florida property is one of the state's newest wildlife management areas — and a refreshingly unpolished destination for anyone who prefers trails over gift shops.
Florida approved the $36.1 million acquisition in March 2024, rescuing land that had operated as a cattle ranch and horse farm. Its location turned out to be the key factor: Creek Ranch sits within both the Lake Hatchineha Watershed and the Florida Wildlife Corridor, filling a gap between existing conservation lands and giving animals a connected path through the landscape rather than forcing them into isolated pockets.
The property isn't just a win for wildlife — it's becoming a draw for outdoor enthusiasts, too. About 1,200 feet of shoreline along Deer Lake offers year-round fishing access, while hiking, cycling, and horseback riding routes wind through terrain that the state has largely left in its natural condition. There are no visitor centers or branded merchandise here, which is very much the point.
Florida's land managers launched a 10-year management strategy for the property in 2025, and Creek Ranch was formally added to the roster of wildlife management areas for the 2026–27 season, cementing its future as a public conservation resource.
