Walt Disney World's sprawling transportation network — buses, boats, and the Disney Skyliner — has seen a string of changes this summer, and at least one of them is permanent. Guests who once used Disney Springs as a casual launching pad to explore resort hotels will need to rethink that habit: as of June 28, 2026, boarding resort-bound buses or water transportation from Disney Springs requires proof of eligibility, such as a Disney Resort hotel reservation or a confirmed dining or experience reservation at a resort property. Those hoping to wander a hotel's grounds without a reservation can no longer rely on Disney transportation to get there.
On the water, things have been in flux as well. The FriendShip boat dock serving Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Beach Club Resort went through maintenance and has since reopened, but refurbishment work along the Sassagoula River Cruise route — which connects Disney's Port Orleans Resort and Old Key West Resort to Disney Springs — has kept those boats out of service, with buses standing in as a replacement through late August.
The Disney Skyliner has had its own challenges. An August loading issue caused significant delays, prompting Disney to dispatch buses to help affected guests. Disney has since filed a construction permit tied to the Hollywood Studios Skyliner station, though the details don't clarify whether it's connected to that incident. What is confirmed is a full Skyliner system closure scheduled from January 24 through January 30, 2027, during which Disney will provide complimentary bus service. Guests at Disney's Riviera Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort, Pop Century Resort, and Art of Animation Resort will feel the biggest impact, since those properties rely on the gondola system for access to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.
Taken together, the changes are a good reminder to build a quick transportation check into any Walt Disney World trip plan — what worked on a past visit may not be the current setup. Disney's free transportation remains one of the resort's standout perks, but knowing what's running (and what's not) can save real time on the ground.
