Walt Disney World's complimentary transportation network — one of the most appreciated perks of staying on property — is seeing a wave of changes, ranging from scheduled maintenance closures to permanent new boarding policies. Travelers planning visits over the coming months would do well to check the details before assuming their usual routes will work the same way.
The Disney Skyliner gondola system is set to pause for its annual refurbishment from January 24 through January 30, 2027. Guests at Pop Century, Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach, and Riviera resorts will lose access to the gondola that week, though Disney will run complimentary buses to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios as a substitute during the downtime.
On the water side, the Sassagoula River Cruise route connecting Disney Springs to Port Orleans, Saratoga Springs, and Old Key West now requires guests to show they have a legitimate reason to visit their destination resort — such as a hotel stay or a confirmed dining reservation. That same verification requirement now also applies to buses departing Disney Springs for Disney Resort hotels, a permanent policy shift designed to prioritize transport for guests with actual reservations. Additionally, beginning July 20, boat service specifically between Disney Springs and Old Key West will pause for refurbishment work, with buses filling in during the closure.
The Disney Springs policy updates address a long-standing workaround where some visitors would park at the shopping complex for free and then use Disney's complimentary transportation to reach nearby hotels or parks. While Disney has not framed the changes in those terms publicly, the new verification system makes that practice considerably harder. Arrival windows have also been introduced, so even eligible guests generally cannot board transportation hours before their scheduled reservation.
