Construction on Monstropolis, the upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed land at Disney's Hollywood Studios, is moving into a new phase — and Disney is giving fans their most detailed look yet at how the finished area will feel. Imagineers have been testing textures and decorative finishes on mock-ups, and according to Disney's latest update, those elements could begin appearing on the actual buildings within a matter of weeks.
One of the signature design choices involves weaving monster characteristics directly into the architecture itself. Guests can expect buildings that incorporate details inspired by teeth, eyes, and horns — elements that hint at a city built for monsters, not humans. Disney has already previewed windowsills shaped with tooth-like forms, and similar creature-inspired touches are planned throughout the land.
Disney also confirmed the name of Monstropolis' main thoroughfare: Dark Avenue. This central street will serve as the spine of the new land, guiding guests past a lineup of destinations that includes Harryhausen's restaurant, Archie's Scare Pig Pizza, retail shops, the Welcome to Monstropolis show, and ultimately the headlining Monsters, Inc. Laugh Factory coaster. The coaster uses a suspended ride system and draws its inspiration from the door vault sequence in the original 2001 film.
Disney hasn't announced a specific opening date within 2027, so the recent construction momentum shouldn't be read as a sign that the debut has moved up on the calendar. That said, the project is visibly advancing: detailed theming is nearly ready to move from test structures to the real thing, and the land's layout is becoming clearer with each new reveal.
