If resort-hopping around Magic Kingdom's lakeside hotels has been part of your Disney World routine, you may want to plan ahead. Visitors have recently reported being asked to show proof of a hotel reservation before boarding water taxis that cross Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.
The checks appear to be happening primarily after Magic Kingdom closes for the evening, when cast members seem to be prioritizing guests returning to their rooms. By that point, most hotel restaurants, lounges, and special experiences have already wrapped up for the night. Enforcement doesn't appear to be consistent throughout the day — multiple guests reported no issues boarding boats while the park was still open.
The boat reports are part of a broader pattern. Since late June, Disney has required guests to show proof of a hotel stay, dining reservation, or Enchanting Extras booking before boarding buses and boats from Disney Springs to resort hotels. Over the Fourth of July holiday, similar checks were in place along the walkway to the Polynesian, and wristbands were required for beach and pool access there. Guests can still verify eligibility through a MagicBand, room key card, or the My Disney Experience app.
The tightening access has sparked debate among Disney fans. Many hotel guests welcome the change, arguing that resort amenities, beaches, and transportation should be reserved for those paying to stay on property. Others worry it marks the end of a beloved Disney World tradition — exploring themed lobbies, dining, and seasonal decorations without needing a park ticket or room booking. Guests with valid dining or experience reservations can still access most resorts, but those without any confirmed booking may find it harder to reach the Magic Kingdom-area properties, especially late at night.
