Longtime EPCOT fans have something to watch closely this summer. Rumors are circulating that Disney may be weighing the retirement of Luminous: The Symphony of Us — the park's current nighttime spectacular — and potentially bringing back IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, the show that anchored World Showcase Lagoon for two decades.
IllumiNations ran from 1999 through 2019, becoming a defining evening tradition for generations of EPCOT visitors. The production was known for its rotating globe centerpiece and a layered mix of fireworks, lasers, and water effects that used the lagoon itself as part of the stage. After its 2019 closure, the park cycled through EPCOT Forever and Harmonious before Luminous debuted in 2023.
Exactly what a revived IllumiNations might look like remains unknown. The rumors don't specify whether Disney would recreate the original show, introduce an updated version, or use the IllumiNations framework as the basis for something new. Disney has not confirmed that Luminous is ending or that IllumiNations is returning.
The timing is drawing attention because D23 is scheduled for August 14–16, 2026. The fan convention has historically served as a platform for major theme park announcements, giving speculation about EPCOT's nighttime future a potential near-term resolution — though no announcement is guaranteed.
