Henderson Beach State Park is one of Destin’s most reliable choices for protected dunes, bright Gulf water and a more natural beach day than the surrounding condo-lined shoreline. It is also a park where arriving early no longer guarantees a drive-up spot: since May 15, 2026, vehicle visitors have needed a day-use reservation before entering.
The system is meant to keep backup from spilling onto U.S. 98/Emerald Coast Parkway and to give beachgoers a better shot at a smooth arrival. Here is the practical version of how it works.
Who needs a reservation?
Anyone arriving for day use by vehicle needs a reservation, including visitors paying the regular admission fee, Florida State Parks annual passholders and City of Destin resident beach-pass holders. Pedestrians and bicyclists do not currently need a reservation, though they still pay the applicable walk-in or bike-in admission fee unless covered by an eligible pass.
Overnight campers use their camping reservation for entry rather than booking a separate day-use reservation. Guests with a qualifying concession reservation may also enter with that confirmation. If your visit involves a pavilion rental or another special arrangement, contact the park ahead of time to coordinate entry for the group.
How to make a Henderson Beach reservation
Book through the Florida State Parks reservation system. Create an account before the day you want to reserve, then choose Henderson Beach State Park, select a day-use pass and pick your visit date. Each date requires its own reservation. The entry fee is paid online as part of the process, and there is no separate booking charge for a day-use reservation.
Reservations open up to 60 days ahead, and same-day reservations can be available until the park reaches its daily reservation limit. For a summer weekend, holiday weekend or a blue-sky forecast during spring break, it is smart to book as soon as your date falls within that 60-day window. Do not count on a same-day opening after you have driven across Destin.
Keep the reservation receipt or barcode on your phone, or bring a printed copy. You will show it at the ranger station. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. until sundown, including holidays.
What it costs
- $6 per vehicle for two to eight people.
- $4 for a single-occupant vehicle.
- $2 per person for pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers and passengers riding with an Annual Individual Entrance Pass holder.
A reservation secures your park entry for that date; it is not a separate parking product added on top of the admission price. If your plans change, cancel rather than simply skipping the visit: day-use entry fees are refundable when a reservation is canceled, while no-shows are not refundable. Check the current cancellation details in your reservation account before booking, since park procedures can change.
Florida State Parks annual pass rules
An annual pass waives the regular day-use admission, but it does not waive the Henderson Beach reservation requirement for people arriving by vehicle. When reserving, select the annual-pass payment option, then bring both the reservation receipt and the physical annual pass to the gate. The passholder must be present, and photo ID may be requested.
The $60 Individual Annual Entrance Pass covers the named passholder; companions are generally charged $2 each at Henderson Beach. The $120 Family Annual Entrance Pass covers up to eight people entering together. These passes can make sense for repeat Florida State Parks visits, but they do not cover camping, pavilion rental or other special-use charges.
City of Destin resident beach-pass rules
A City of Destin resident pass also does not mean you can bypass the online reservation. Residents with that windshield pass reserve through the same Florida State Parks system, using the code supplied by the city, and must show both their reservation receipt and their valid City of Destin pass at the entrance. The city currently publishes the code as DESTINPASS, but verify it before reserving in case the city updates the process.
The city resident pass is available only to people who live within incorporated Destin city limits, not simply the broader Destin mailing area. It costs $30 for the calendar year, or $25 for residents age 65 and older, is limited to one pass per household and permits up to eight people in the vehicle. It must be affixed to the driver-side windshield to be valid.
A few arrival-day details
Your booking is for entry, not an invitation to come and go freely. If you need to leave, ask the ranger station for a reentry ticket before exiting; without it, you should not expect to get back in. Pack water, sun protection and a phone battery that can display your receipt at the gate.
Bottom line: reserve your Henderson Beach vehicle entry before setting out, save the barcode where you can reach it without cell service, and bring the physical pass if you selected an annual-pass or Destin resident-pass option. Check current details before you go, especially for busy beach weekends.
