Fans of the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom can breathe a sigh of relief — the iconic hanging corpse in the Stretching Room is still there. What looked like an absence of the figure in the left Stretching Room turned out to be nothing more than a very dirty scrim obscuring the view, according to Disney.
Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion operates two Stretching Rooms side by side so Cast Members can keep guests moving efficiently. Observers noticed on July 24, 2026, that the hanging corpse appeared to be missing from the left room. Photos taken that day and later brightened for clarity revealed that dust and grime on the scrim were simply blocking the silhouette from view.
The question of whether to permanently retire the hanging figure is not a new one. Imagineer Michele Hobbs acknowledged the discussion as far back as 2021 during a refurbishment of the Disneyland version of the attraction, and Imagineer Kim Irvine revisited the topic around the 2024 Disneyland updates, describing the removal as structurally complicated. Most of those conversations have centered on the Disneyland ride rather than the Walt Disney World version.
Disney has not made any public statement confirming or ruling out a future removal, though WDW News Today reports it has heard informally that the removal is no longer under active consideration. It's also worth noting that the corpse has been temporarily pulled during past Stretching Room refurbishments before returning to its post.
