Guests visiting The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom can once again catch a clear glimpse of the attraction's iconic hanging corpse in the left Stretching Room. The figure had become nearly invisible due to dirt buildup on the scrim stretched across the ceiling — an issue Disney confirmed after it was flagged last week.
By Monday morning, the scrim had been cleaned and the lighting adjusted to better illuminate the ceiling, restoring the eerie silhouette that generations of visitors have come to expect. The corpse had remained visible the whole time in the right Stretching Room, which uses a separate scrim.
The hanging figure has drawn periodic debate over the years, with Imagineers at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland acknowledging internal discussions about whether to remove it due to sensitivities around the topic of suicide. Disneyland Imagineer Kim Irvine noted as recently as the 2024 Disneyland refurbishment that the question was "complicated, structurally."
However, Disney has since indicated that permanently removing the hanging corpse is no longer under consideration, though it may be taken down temporarily during future refurbishments.
