Construction around Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion is picking up steam, and it's not just the attraction itself getting attention. A building adjacent to the mansion — once used as a queue extension before construction walls blocked it off — is in the middle of a noticeable expansion, with a steel framework added behind the structure and then enclosed with plywood, sheathing, and fresh exterior finishes.
The addition is clad in yellow paneling that stands out from the older blue-gray exterior, though it closely echoes the shingles on the building's existing tower. Several white window shutters have also been installed. Disney has not announced what the expanded space will be used for, though the work may be connected to a permit filed earlier this year involving MLC Theming.
The Haunted Mansion itself has been undergoing an exterior refurbishment at the same time, with themed scrims covering portions of the building while crews worked behind them. Most of those coverings have now come down, though some sections of the queue and nearby walkways still have wooden boards in place. Inside the queue, construction walls recently came down to reveal rearranged gravestones in the cemetery scene.
Both projects are unfolding as Disney pushes forward on Piston Peak, a new land set to replace the former Rivers of America area with a Pixar's Cars-inspired national park environment. The Rivers of America has already been drained, Tom Sawyer Island has permanently closed, and the Liberty Square Riverboat has ended operations to make way for the expansion.
Disney has confirmed the construction activity but has not shared a full picture of how this corner of the park will look once all the work wraps up, according to Disney Fanatic.
