Guests checking in to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa this summer have encountered a quiet surprise: the resort's Alice in Wonderland-themed splash pad has been closed since August 12, with no advance notice or official explanation from Walt Disney World Resort. The shutdown came without any formal refurbishment announcement — a notable contrast to other ongoing construction projects at nearby Magic Kingdom Area hotels that Disney has publicly acknowledged.
For much of that stretch, the play area showed obvious signs of work underway. The slides were blocked off, and the signature oversized Mad Hatter hat bucket — which normally fills and dramatically dumps water on guests below — sat wrapped in plastic. Decorative portraits of Alice, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter were spotted resting on the ground, apparently waiting to be rehung on the play structure.
A small update emerged on August 26, when theme park news outlet WDWNT reported that the Mad Hatter bucket had been unwrapped. Even so, water still wasn't running through the splash pad or slides as of that report, and a construction lift visible at the site suggested the project remains a work in progress.
As of publication, Walt Disney World has not commented on the closure or offered any reopening timeline. Guests staying at the resort do still have access to other amenities, including additional pools, Monorail service, and bus transportation. Anyone whose trip plans hinge on the splash pad is encouraged to check with a Front Desk cast member for the latest on-the-ground information.
