Visitors walking into EPCOT this week have encountered an unusually quiet main entrance: the fountain in front of Spaceship Earth is empty. The basin has been dry since at least July 21, with the water effects along the structure's transparent pylons switched off and thousands of coins — mostly pennies — resting visibly on the bottom.
Walt Disney World Resort has not shared a reason for the shutdown. The most likely explanations are routine maintenance or a scheduled coin collection, both of which happen periodically at water features across Disney's parks.
The fountain is a relatively recent addition to EPCOT, installed as part of a broader entrance plaza redesign in 2020. It pays homage to the original fountain that greeted guests when the park opened on October 1, 1982. Three pylons etched with the EPCOT logo anchor the design, and at night the water display syncs with the light show on Spaceship Earth's exterior.
If the shutdown is indeed for coin collection, guests' spare change will go toward a good cause. Walt Disney World regularly donates proceeds from fountain collections to children's charities, with Central Florida funds typically benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Give Kids The World Village, a no-cost resort for families visiting through wish-granting organizations.
