Disney has released the first teaser for Disney Worldbuilders, an upcoming feature documentary that pulls back the curtain on how the company transforms its most beloved stories into immersive theme park experiences. The film is directed by Leslie Iwerks, the Academy Award- and Emmy-nominated filmmaker known for The Imagineering Story and The Pixar Story.
The documentary will premiere at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event before arriving on Disney+ in August. Its focus is on the creative process behind Disney's parks — specifically how fictional worlds born on screen become the real-world lands and attractions that guests find so hard to leave.
Iwerks sat down with a remarkable roster of creative and executive talent for the film, including Bob Iger, Josh D'Amaro, Jennifer Lee, Dave Filoni, James Cameron, Jared Bush, Jon Favreau, Kevin Feige, and Pete Docter. Each shares personal reflections on their inspirations and the Disney memories that have shaped their careers.
Beyond celebrating what's already been built, the documentary also offers rare glimpses of new lands, areas, and experiences currently in development — giving viewers a preview of where Disney's worldbuilding is headed next. Iwerks brings a uniquely personal connection to the subject: she is the granddaughter of Ub Iwerks, an original Disney animator and co-creator of Mickey Mouse, and the daughter of Disney Legend Don Iwerks.
