A quiet but telling change has arrived at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Walt Disney World Resort recently installed a dozen permanent umbrellas on benches inside the Discovery River amphitheater, the large outdoor waterfront arena located in the park's Asia area near Theater in the Wild and Expedition Everest.
The shade structures are fixed directly into the wooden bench seating closest to the Theater in the Wild — home to Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! — though the section of seating nearer to Expedition Everest has not yet received similar installations. As of now, Walt Disney World has not announced any corresponding plans for that portion of the venue.
The significance lies in what the umbrellas would obstruct: any water-based show performed in the arena. The Discovery River amphitheater last hosted live entertainment in 2022, when the KiteTails show concluded its run. Before that, the space was used for the Rivers of Light nighttime spectacular, which was reimagined as Rivers of Light: We Are One in 2019 before being retired during the COVID-19 pandemic. The venue has since been open as a casual seating area for guests.
Animal Kingdom's operating hours in recent years have also not extended late enough to support a nighttime spectacular, making a revival even less likely in the near term. The umbrella installation now adds a physical dimension to what had largely been a scheduling reality for the park's entertainment calendar.
