Magic Kingdom's upcoming Piston Peak land just got a lot more interesting for Florida visitors who know all too well how quickly an afternoon downpour can derail a theme park day. At D23, Disney Imagineers revealed that Cars Ridge Run Rally — one of two attractions coming to the new Cars-themed land — is being specifically engineered to keep running even when the rain rolls in.
The ride sends guests on a racing adventure through Piston Peak National Park, taking in a snow-capped mountain, a geyser field, and other wilderness scenery inspired by the Cars universe. Imagineers said the attraction is being built to withstand rain better than most outdoor Disney rides, a deliberate design choice given Florida's notoriously unpredictable weather patterns.
The usual safety rules still apply — lightning, severe storms, or other dangerous conditions will still prompt a closure — but the goal is to minimize the routine rain shutdowns that outdoor attractions so often face. That's a meaningful promise for guests planning a Walt Disney World trip around this new land.
Piston Peak's second attraction, Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along, rounds out the land with a family-friendly demolition derby ride featuring a full-scale animatronic of the school-bus villain from Cars 3. A to-scale model of the entire land was on display at D23, giving fans their most detailed look yet at what's coming to Magic Kingdom.
