Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress is getting its most significant transformation since the attraction moved to Magic Kingdom, with Disney Imagineering confirming a sweeping reimagining targeting a late spring 2027 opening. The announcement came during the 2026 D23 Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Imagineers shared a wave of specifics about what guests can expect when the beloved rotating theater returns.
One of the most meaningful moves Disney made was bringing in 96-year-old Disney Legend Bob Gurr as a creative and mechanical consultant. Gurr originally engineered the attraction's rotating theater mechanism alongside Roger Broggie for the 1964–1965 New York World's Fair, making him the closest thing to a living authority on how the ride works and what it stands for. His involvement is widely seen as a guarantee that the overhauled attraction will honor its origins while moving forward thoughtfully.
On the creative side, Imagineers are reviving Walt Disney's own pre-production method: every scene in the updated show was first built as a hand-crafted dollhouse miniature, allowing the team to test lighting, sightlines, and staging at small scale before committing to full-size sets. The story itself is also shifting — rather than centering entirely on the Father character recapping household appliances, Act I will now focus on the family's children and their dreams, with those aspirations serving as the emotional thread that the audience follows across each decade. Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis will voice the Mom and Dad characters.
Two deliberate design choices stand out. First, the famously dated "contemporary" final scene is being replaced with a finale set far into the future — a fix that sidesteps the problem of real-world technology making the show look stale within a few years. Second, not a single character anywhere in the attraction will be shown using a cell phone or tablet, a pointed creative decision meant to keep the focus on family connection rather than screen time.
