Guests who wandered into Frontierland on July 13 noticed something subtly different near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: the utility barn attached to the attraction had been repainted overnight, blending into the area's rugged, Old West aesthetic for the first time. Walt Disney World made no formal announcement about the change.
The makeover was purely cosmetic — the barn's siding and garage doors remained structurally unchanged, but a new aged-brown finish gives both the building and its doors the same weathered, time-worn look that defines the rest of Frontierland. The barn itself was added during Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's lengthy refurbishment, which ran from January 2025 through May 2026 and included a full steel track replacement, new ride vehicles, refreshed theming, and a brand-new Rainbow Caverns scene complete with glimmering stalagmites, reflective ponds, and audio-animatronic bats.
The barn repaint is a small but telling detail within a Frontierland that is changing rapidly. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently last year to make room for Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-inspired expansion featuring two new rides designed as distinct experiences from anything at Disney California Adventure. Disney Imagineers are building the new land around the visual language of America's national parks, incorporating the former waterway's footprint into the design.
Elsewhere in the area, the Haunted Mansion is undergoing an exterior refurbishment to prepare portions of its backstage facade for visibility once Piston Peak National Park opens. Meanwhile, work on a Disney Villains land has begun in earnest — thousands of trees have been cleared and staging is underway on the long-anticipated expansion. Neither project has a confirmed opening date.
