Tropical Storm Bertha is making its presence felt along the Florida Panhandle, kicking up gusty winds, steady rain, and rough surf that have prompted officials to close beaches to swimmers. Double red flags — meaning the water is off-limits to everyone — are flying at Panhandle beaches, and anyone caught entering the Gulf while those flags are up faces a fine of up to $500 and potential jail time.
Two popular piers also shut their gates Tuesday afternoon because of the conditions. The M.B. Miller County Pier and the Russell Fields City Pier in Bay County were both closed as the storm churned through the Gulf.
Despite the rough weather, visitors from Georgia and Texas told reporters they were rolling with the punches — swapping swim days for bike rides and sightseeing. Bay County locals, meanwhile, seemed largely unfazed, with some planning fishing trips as soon as conditions allowed.
