Tropical Depression Two is moving slowly northwest through the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into a named tropical storm within the next 24 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. If it reaches tropical storm strength, it will be named Bertha.
A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the western Florida Panhandle coastline and adjacent Gulf waters, including Pensacola Beach. A watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours, making now the time to review your plans and stay current with the latest forecast.
The primary concerns for the region are not a major hurricane but rather rough beach conditions, heavy rain, and gusty winds near the coast. Life-threatening rip currents are expected to develop along northwest Florida beaches beginning Tuesday, and swimming in the Gulf is strongly discouraged — even for experienced swimmers.
Boaters should also prepare for deteriorating Gulf conditions through the middle of the week. On land, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected each day, with some rain bands capable of producing several inches of rain in a short period. Localized flash flooding remains possible, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
