Early risers — or dedicated night owls — along Florida's east coast have a reason to set their alarms this week. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a national security payload for the National Reconnaissance Organization is scheduled to lift off from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 3:09 a.m. ET on Thursday, July 30.
The launch is expected to produce a sonic boom, and weather and cloud cover permitting, the rocket should be visible across a wide stretch of the coast — from as far north as Jacksonville Beach to as far south as West Palm Beach. That puts Volusia County, just north of Brevard, in an excellent viewing zone.
For Volusia County residents, the best views come from beach-facing or south-facing spots along the coast. Top picks include the beaches at South New Smyrna Beach and Canaveral National Seashore's Apollo Beach, as well as a cluster of riverfront parks and piers in Oak Hill — the southernmost city in South Volusia. Other solid options include Halifax Harbor Marina in Daytona Beach, Ormond-by-the-Sea, Rose Bay in Port Orange, and George R. Kennedy Memorial Park in Edgewater. The key in all cases: look due south.
