Flooding in South Florida is pushing snakes from their usual habitat and into residential and commercial areas, according to wildlife trapper Jay of Treasure Coast Wildlife Trappers.
Jay told WPBF that removal calls have tripled during the recent wet weather. Over the past month, he said he removed nearly 50 snakes, including rattlesnakes, water moccasins and coral snakes.
Reports are not limited to canals and brushy areas. Snakes have been found in garages, around homes and near businesses; one rattlesnake was reported outside a veterinary clinic. As water rises, foundations, garage slabs and other elevated, dry spots can offer shelter to displaced animals.
Jay advised residents not to handle or try to kill a snake, particularly given the venomous species being encountered. He said calling a professional trapper is the safer response when a snake appears at a home or business.
WPBF reported that the heightened activity is expected to ease as rain tapers off and temperatures cool, indicating the increase is tied to current weather conditions rather than a permanent behavioral change.
