The North Florida Wildlife Center in Tallahassee is getting a colorful new addition. Construction crews began work this week on a flamingo pond exhibit that will eventually be the first thing visitors see when they walk through the front entrance.
The habitat is designed with native plants and trees surrounding the pond, giving the setting a naturalistic feel. According to Ryan Reines, head of the North Florida Wildlife Center, the project was made possible entirely by a single anonymous donor who chose to cover all construction costs.
Reines says 18 American flamingos are expected to arrive at the center before the end of the year. He noted that the timing feels right to spotlight one of Florida's most recognizable and beloved birds.
