NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston is developing robotic hardware and software meant to support astronauts on increasingly complex missions deeper into space.
The center’s 16-member Dexterous Robotics Team focuses on robots that can perform tasks people do with their hands. The group is part of NASA’s Robotic System Technology Branch, which also works on mobility systems including unmanned planetary rovers.
According to NASA, advanced robotic systems can improve crew productivity, reduce risk and expand the capabilities available for space exploration. The team’s work includes NASA’s Valkyrie humanoid robot and robotic-arm testing.
Team lead Shaun Azimi said the goal is not to replace human explorers. Instead, the team aims to create capable, reliable robots that can work alongside people in extreme environments, helping make human exploration safer and more sustainable.
