NASA is counting down to the August 30 launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Kennedy Space Center in Florida — and the agency is giving the public a preview before liftoff. A virtual media briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, July 29, where NASA officials will walk through the mission's status and goals.
Once in orbit, the Roman Telescope will deliver a field of view at least 100 times wider than the Hubble Space Telescope's, enabling sweeping, deep-sky surveys of the cosmos that weren't previously possible. The mission is launching nine months ahead of its original schedule.
Leading the briefing will be representatives from NASA Headquarters and Goddard Space Flight Center, including the Astrophysics Division director, the project manager, the senior project scientist, and the integration and test scientist for the Roman mission.
Preparations at Kennedy Space Center are already well underway. Technicians and engineers recently used a crane to move the telescope to a specialized work stand as launch readiness activities continue.
