If you're flying into Southwest Florida with visions of sand between your toes the moment you land, you may want to temper those expectations. A new study from Mozio, a global ground transportation booking platform, ranked 100 beach destinations worldwide based on how quickly travelers can get from the nearest airport to the shore — and Southwest Florida's most beloved beaches didn't fare well.

Sanibel Island came in last among Florida destinations, ranking No. 76 globally. The trip from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) clocks in at roughly 50 minutes over 29.4 miles. Naples fared only slightly better at No. 74, with beaches sitting 34.3 miles from RSW — the longest airport-to-sand distance of any Florida location in the study — though the drive averages about 42 minutes.

On the brighter end of the Florida spectrum, Key West earned the title of the most accessible beach destination in the entire United States and ranked third in the world. From Key West International Airport, travelers can reach the beach in just six minutes over a 1.8-mile drive. Daytona Beach (No. 15 globally, 13 minutes), Fort Lauderdale (No. 21, 17 minutes), Panama City Beach (No. 34, 18 minutes), Miami Beach (No. 41, 23 minutes), Pensacola Beach (No. 45, 25 minutes), and Siesta Key (No. 50, 28 minutes) all landed in the global top 50.

Mozio's methodology measured Google driving time and distance from each destination's primary commercial airport to a representative beach point, weighting the final accessibility score 60% on travel time and 40% on distance. The ranking covers ground transfer only and doesn't account for flight availability or frequency.

For travelers who prioritize minimal time between touchdown and toes-in-the-water, the data offers a useful planning lens — even if it's a reminder that Southwest Florida's gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches require a little patience to reach.
