A new leader has arrived at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Bakari, a 21-year-old male western lowland gorilla, is gradually making himself at home on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, where he's stepping into the role of dominant silverback for the park's family troop. His arrival follows the departure of Gino, who led the group for nearly three decades dating back to the park's opening.
The transition is being handled with plenty of care. Animal care experts are guiding a phased introduction process that starts with the gorillas observing one another through a protected viewing area before slowly progressing to closer contact. The approach is designed to give Bakari and the resident females time to build trust and establish a comfortable social dynamic on their own terms.
Before coming to Animal Kingdom, Bakari lived in a bachelor group at another Association of Zoos and Aquariums–accredited facility, so joining a family troop represents a meaningful shift in his daily life. His placement is supported by the AZA's Species Survival Plan, which works to maintain genetically diverse populations of western lowland gorillas — a critically endangered species — across accredited institutions.
Early impressions from his care team paint a picture of a calm, observant personality. Bakari has a habit of stretching out and lounging with his chin resting on his hand while quietly taking in his surroundings — already a favorite quirk among the people who work with him. As introductions progress, guests visiting Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail may begin catching glimpses of him interacting with troop members.
