A key assembly milestone for NASA's Artemis III mission was reached on July 30, 2026, when technicians successfully joined the Orion crew module and service module inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The crew module is designed to carry and sustain four astronauts during the mission: NASA's Randy Bresnik, Andre Douglas, and Frank Rubio, along with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency.
While the crew module serves as the astronauts' living and working space, the service module handles power and propulsion for Orion throughout the mission. Together, the joined spacecraft will support a mission focused on testing rendezvous and docking capabilities with test articles — engineering stand-ins — for commercial human landing systems developed by both Blue Origin and SpaceX.
Kennedy Space Center, located on Florida's Space Coast, continues to serve as the hub for NASA's deep space exploration efforts under the Artemis program. This latest assembly step brings the agency closer to returning humans to the lunar surface.
