If you've noticed something different about the trash cans at Walt Disney World this summer, you're not imagining it. Since a single test unit appeared at EPCOT's Germany Pavilion back in December 2024, the resort has been quietly rolling out solar-powered, sensor-equipped trash cans across all four parks — and Animal Kingdom is setting the design bar high.
The latest additions landed in the Asia section of the park and along Discovery Island Trails. The Asia cans are deep green with a red triangle, tiger, and corner cloud motif — artwork carried forward from the old brown cans that used to fill the area. Discovery Island Trails got dark green units featuring a gold-yellow Tree of Life, tying them visually to cans already installed at the entrance plaza and The Oasis back in July. Traditional brown cans are still standing in parts of Asia near Expedition Everest, so for now guests can see both generations side by side.
The contrast with EPCOT's rollout has been hard to miss. Most World Showcase pavilions received plain brown cans with a generic compass medallion, with only The American Adventure receiving genuinely custom artwork. Animal Kingdom flipped that approach entirely, applying location-specific theming throughout. Walt Disney Imagineering was involved in the design process specifically to ensure the new units echo the older cans they're replacing — important in a park built almost entirely on environmental storytelling.
Beyond aesthetics, the cans bring some practical upgrades. Solar panels power a built-in compactor, allowing each unit to hold significantly more waste before needing to be emptied. Trash and recycling go in through a mailbox-style front opening, with lids accessible by hand or foot pedal. Sensors can alert custodial cast members when a unit is getting full, reducing the need for manual checks across a park that sees tens of thousands of guests daily. The hand-and-pedal setup did confuse enough guests early on that Disney released an instructional video to explain how to use the opening correctly.

Disney has committed to installing the new cans across all four parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs, so the rollout is far from over — Animal Kingdom itself still has areas left to convert. Disney Fanatic first reported on the new Animal Kingdom designs.
