Walt Disney World began with the opening of Magic Kingdom on Oct. 1, 1971, following the company’s 1965 land purchase in Central Florida. Roy Disney oversaw the project after Walt Disney’s death in 1966, and the resort has since expanded into a major destination near Orlando.
Magic Kingdom places Cinderella Castle at its center, with Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland and Tomorrowland creating separate themed settings around it. The resort now includes four main parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Each park approaches its subject differently. Epcot, which opened in October 1982, is anchored by the Spaceship Earth geosphere and includes World Showcase’s country-themed pavilions. Hollywood Studios focuses on film and entertainment, while Animal Kingdom combines wildlife with fictional settings.
