Walt Disney World marked 55 years since the opening of Magic Kingdom on Oct. 1, 1971.

When the park first welcomed guests, Walt Disney World consisted of one theme park, two hotels and a campground. The resort was built on 27,400 acres of Central Florida swampland and was envisioned by Walt Disney as “The Vacation Kingdom of the World.”

Today, the resort is described by ClickOrlando as the world’s most visited theme park resort, a far larger destination than the original property that opened more than five decades ago.
