Passengers aboard Utopia of the Seas faced an unexpectedly long wait at Port Canaveral on Monday when a mechanical issue prevented the massive Royal Caribbean ship from departing on schedule. The vessel, originally set to leave at 3 p.m. for a 4-night cruise to Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas, didn't actually clear the port until sometime between 3 and 5 a.m. the following morning, according to various passengers onboard.
What was first announced as a roughly two-hour delay kept stretching as the evening wore on. The ship's captain acknowledged an ongoing maintenance problem, though the specific nature of the issue was not disclosed. Guests shared updates on social media as the hours passed, noting that Royal Caribbean kept most of the ship's venues — restaurants, bars, and shows — fully operational while docked. The two notable exceptions were the casino and onboard shops, which cruise lines are required to keep closed while in port.
With the late departure, Royal Caribbean adjusted the itinerary so guests will now have a sea day on Tuesday, visit Nassau on Wednesday, and arrive at Perfect Day at CocoCay on Thursday. The original plan had CocoCay as the first stop on Tuesday.
The schedule change rippled beyond Utopia as well. Wonder of the Seas, a similarly sized ship sailing a comparable itinerary out of Miami, also shifted its CocoCay visit to Thursday. The coordination likely allowed Royal Caribbean to keep pre-booked excursions and private island rentals intact, avoiding a wave of cancellations and refunds for guests on both ships.
