Utopia of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's most activity-packed ships, but it sails primarily on short weekend itineraries — which raises a fair question: how much can you realistically experience in just three nights? Matt Hochberg of Royal Caribbean Blog recently put that to the test, arriving at the terminal with a personal list of 12 things he hoped to accomplish and a deliberate plan to see how far he'd get.
The first reality check came from the itinerary itself. The sailing visited both Nassau, Bahamas and Perfect Day CocoCay, meaning two of the three daytime periods were spent largely off the ship. Hochberg booked a Royal Beach Club pass in Nassau and spent time at Oasis Lagoon on CocoCay — enjoyable choices, but ones that quietly chipped away at onboard time. Add in a consistent evening rhythm of showering, a pre-dinner cocktail, dinner, and a show like Aqua80sToo, and the hours evaporate faster than most first-timers expect.
By day two, he found himself making genuine trade-offs — staying longer at a pub to catch a favorite performer he only sees once or twice a year, or leaving the beach club early to squeeze in more ship time. A spontaneous last-night dinner at Izumi Hibachi with family also bumped a few planned items. When he finally revisited his original list after disembarking, six things remained undone: the Price Is Right live game show, a phone-based trivia game, the Suite Sun Deck, the fitness center, a scheduled trivia session, and a dip in one of the ship's pools (he made it into a beach-club pool, but never one onboard).
His takeaway isn't discouraging — it's practical. Hochberg suggests first-timers on Utopia pick one must-see show, one or two restaurants they're genuinely excited about, and a couple of specific activities, then treat everything else as a pleasant surprise if time allows. Trying to run down a full checklist, he argues, turns a vacation into something closer to a task. Leaving a few things undone, meanwhile, gives you a built-in reason to book the next sailing.
