Steakhouse 71 opened in 2021 as part of Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary celebration, replacing The Wave of American Flavors in the same Contemporary Resort space. Its name nods to 1971, the year Walt Disney World first opened. Unlike many steakhouses, it operates across breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, which meant a full-day closure had the potential to affect far more guests than a single dinner service would have.
The brief restaurant closure is happening against a much larger backdrop: Disney's Contemporary Resort has been working through an extensive exterior refurbishment since September 2024. Scaffolding and scrim have covered portions of the resort's iconic A-frame structure, and a crane arrived on the north side of the building in late August. Disney has pushed its projected completion date back more than once — the refurbishment is now expected to continue through late 2027. Transportation, pools, restaurants, and most other amenities are confirmed to remain available to guests throughout the project.
