August in St. Augustine is anything but slow. The city's calendar is loaded with outdoor adventures, live music, community gatherings and cultural programming — enough to fill every weekend and then some all month long.
The month kicks off on August 1 with a flurry of happenings: the Shoes of Hope giveaway for local kids at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center, a Night Art Market at Lakeside Park on A1A South featuring live music by Dalton Clifton, and a sailing race hosted by the St. Augustine Sailing Sisters that benefits survivors' services at the Betty Griffin Center and St. Francis House.
History buffs and families will want to mark August 9 for cannon firings at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, with demonstrations scheduled at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center hosts Jazz at the Excelsior on both August 5 — featuring Grammy and Stellar Award nominee Marcus Click — and August 12, with Grammy Award-winning musician Longineu Parsons taking the stage.
Nature lovers can head to the GTM Research Reserve for a Guided Exploration Hike on August 1, Nature Journaling on August 6 and a Family Seining event at the Guana Dam on August 8. First Friday ArtWalk on August 8 keeps galleries and art spaces open from 4 p.m. to dusk, and free Concerts in the Plaza run on August 6 and August 13.
