Universal Orlando Resort has begun installing solar-powered trash cans and recycling bins across its property, with the first units spotted in CityWalk. The rollout mirrors a similar initiative already underway at Walt Disney World, where the same style of bins started appearing in June.
The new receptacles are easy to pick out: each features a curved top fitted with a solar panel that powers an internal trash compactor, reducing how often staff need to empty them. At Universal, the bins are dressed up with purple decals and neon-style CityWalk branding, giving them a look that fits the district's colorful aesthetic.
Most of the units spotted so far are positioned on the bridges linking CityWalk to Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. Each bin can be opened by hand or by foot pedal — though that dual-method design has reportedly caused some confusion, with at least one discarded cup spotted on the ground beside a can rather than inside it. Disney parks faced similar head-scratching from guests when their version debuted, suggesting Universal may want to consider some on-site signage or guidance.
