Disney's Hollywood Studios is the latest park to get an upgrade in an unexpected place: the trash cans. A pair of the new solar-powered, compacting waste bins has been spotted on Hollywood Boulevard, just outside the entrance to the Walt Disney Studios area — one of the park's busiest stretches.
The cans are hard to miss. Bright green and themed to their surroundings, they feature a graphic of the Chinese Theatre and the message "Please Help Keep Our City Clean," giving them an on-brand Hollywood feel. Like the other new models spotted around Disney World, they use solar power to compact their contents, which means cast members can service them less often. They also include a foot pedal so guests never have to touch the opening with their hands.
Hollywood Studios joins EPCOT and Animal Kingdom, where the new cans had already made appearances. The rollout hasn't been without its detractors — particularly at EPCOT, where longtime festival-goers have a well-established tradition of using the tops of trash cans as impromptu dining ledges during crowded events. Some of the park's more distinctive older cans have even developed devoted fan followings, making the swap-out a surprisingly spirited topic on social media.
