Magic Kingdom's long-anticipated Villains Land is taking shape, and Disney has now confirmed details about one of its two major attractions: a Maleficent-themed roller coaster. The ride will send guests racing through enchanted briar around Maleficent's mountaintop fortress, and Disney has described it as "thrilling" while promising the experience will include elements the company has never attempted before.
The new land will be built behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, expanding Magic Kingdom into a multi-acre area dedicated entirely to Disney's iconic villains. In addition to the coaster, Disney also revealed that a dark ride will take guests beyond the Magic Mirror to encounter other classic Disney villains — rounding out the two major attractions planned for the area, which will also include villains-themed dining and shopping.
Both rides were among the details shared at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Disney also unveiled concept art for the land, internally referred to simply as Villains Land. Walt Disney Imagineering has described the creative direction as pushing into "dark and mysterious" territory unlike anything currently found in the park.
No opening timeline for Villains Land has been announced. Fans interested in planning a Walt Disney World visit will want to keep an eye out for further updates as the expansion progresses.
