If you've hunted for pressed pennies at Magic Kingdom, you may notice the machines look a little different these days. Walt Disney World has been swapping out its older penny dispensers for sleek new models with digital screens, and the rollout has now touched all five lands of the park — Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Main Street, U.S.A.
The updated machines accept both cash and credit or debit card, though card-paying guests must purchase a full set of eight designs for $5 rather than choosing a single coin for $1 with cash. One other notable change: the new dispensers come pre-loaded with their own copper discs, so guests no longer need to bring a penny from home to create a souvenir.
According to WDWNT, the first new machines appeared on August 31 near Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, in Storybook Circus, at the Star Traders gift shop, near the Tomorrowland Speedway, and at the Walt Disney World Railroad station and Tony's Town Square Restaurant on Main Street. By September 2, the upgrade had reached the Emporium, Fantasy Faire, the Confectionery, Curtain Call Collectibles, and spots near Pirates of the Caribbean, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe, and Country Bear Musical Jamboree.
Collectible medallion machines received a parallel update on the same day. These dispensers offer premade coins — $10 for a single design or $35 for a set of four — and now include Disney's first colorful medallion design, a departure from the traditional solid gold and silver options the park has carried for years. New medallion machines have been confirmed at the Emporium, Sir Mickey's, the Main Street Firehouse, the Walt Disney World Railroad station, under the Adventureland veranda, and near Tiana's Bayou Adventure.
