Magic Kingdom marked its 55th anniversary on October 1 with a morning ceremony at Cinderella Castle, where Walt Disney World President Joe Schott addressed guests ahead of the park’s usual opening time.
According to Disney Fanatic, Schott took the stage at 8:50 a.m. and reflected on memories made at the park since its October 1, 1971 opening. He also recognized the original Walt Disney World hotel resorts that opened alongside Magic Kingdom.
The anniversary observance included a new collection of commemorative merchandise tied to the milestone and the park’s early history. Guests visiting for the morning program would have needed to be inside the park early, with Early Theme Park Entry guests among those most likely to have been on Main Street, U.S.A. before the ceremony.
Magic Kingdom was the first theme park at Walt Disney World Resort. Walt Disney died in 1966 before the Florida project was complete; his brother, Roy O. Disney, guided it to opening and formally dedicated the park later that month.
Several opening-era attractions remain, including Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, “it’s a small world,” and The Hall of Presidents. The park has since added attractions including Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run.

This anniversary arrives during a major period of change for Magic Kingdom. Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and Liberty Square Riverboat in July 2025 for the planned Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park area. Disney has also announced a Villains Land expansion beyond Frontierland. Those projects follow recent Frontierland changes, including the 2024 debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Country Bear Musical Jamboree, as well as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s reopening this year after refurbishment.
