Royal Caribbean is honoring both a history-making military leader and the nation's veterans with its choice of godmother for Legend of the Seas. Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Lori J. Robinson — the first woman ever to lead a U.S. combatant command and former head of both NORAD and U.S. Northern Command — will officially christen the ship during a naming ceremony in Fort Lauderdale on Veterans Day, November 11.
The timing is anything but accidental. Royal Caribbean says the ceremony will serve a dual purpose: formally welcoming Legend of the Seas to the United States while also honoring veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. Robinson, who built a 37-year Air Force career, was chosen because the cruise line sees her as a role model for women and an advocate for those balancing military service with family life — qualities that felt more meaningful to Royal Caribbean than celebrity name recognition.
Robinson expressed pride in both the role and the date chosen for it. "Having the ship's naming ceremony on Veterans Day makes this especially meaningful to me," she said in a statement, adding that she looks forward to recognizing generations of men and women who have served. She also reflected on how a ship like Legend creates the kinds of connections between families and loved ones that she valued throughout her own career.
The naming ceremony itself follows a long maritime tradition. As godmother, Robinson will push a button that releases a champagne bottle to smash against the hull — Royal Caribbean's modern, goof-proof twist on the classic christening ritual. She holds the title for the lifetime of the ship, and her portrait will be displayed near Guest Services on board.
Legend of the Seas is the third Icon Class ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet. It has been sailing European itineraries since July and will reposition to Fort Lauderdale in November, after which it will offer 6-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Southern Caribbean sailings, each including a stop at Perfect Day CocoCay.
