If you've been sleeping on the Japan Pavilion at EPCOT, the arrival of a Tamago Sando at Katsura Grill might be reason enough to finally stop in. The quick-service spot — already a favorite for sushi, ramen, and boozy shaved ice — recently added the Japanese-style egg sandwich to its menu for $12.
On paper, the Tamago Sando with Panko Fried Shrimp sounds straightforward: fluffy egg salad tucked into buttery brioche, finished with a sweet-and-savory tonkatsu sauce. In practice, though, a few of those descriptors don't quite match what lands on your tray. The bread reads more like a soft hot dog bun than brioche, and the egg filling is a firm, chopped texture rather than a smooth, creamy salad — closer to a chopped hard-boiled egg with mild flavor.
What does shine is the panko-fried shrimp, which brings a satisfying crunch and a clean seafood flavor that ends up carrying the whole sandwich. The tonkatsu sauce layers in just enough sweetness and tang to pull everything together into a well-balanced bite.
The bottom line: if you love shrimp and savory flavors, this one is worth the $12. Just go in knowing it skews more shrimp sandwich than traditional Japanese tamago sando — purists expecting something closer to the pillowy, creamy egg sandwiches found in Japan may find it a little off the mark.
