The Jacksonville Humane Society is giving prospective pet owners a rare deal: from August 10 through Friday, August 14, anyone looking to adopt a dog or cat can pay whatever adoption fee they choose — whether that's $5, $50, $100, or another amount entirely.
The shelter says it is currently caring for an unusually high number of animals, making community adoptions especially urgent right now. Every adoption frees up space for another animal in need, and all pets available during the event are already spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines — meaning they can head home with their new family the same day.
Adopters should keep in mind a few additional costs that fall outside the event's flexible pricing, including city rabies licensing fees and basic supplies like leashes, collars, or cat carriers.
Jacksonville Humane Society CEO Lawrence Nicolas framed the timing as a natural fit for families already in a back-to-school mindset. "While families are shopping for backpacks and preparing for a new school year, we're hoping they'll also consider adding a new member to the family," Nicolas said. "Every adoption creates space for another animal in need and gives a deserving pet the chance to begin a brand-new chapter."
