If you've been thinking about adding a four-legged family member, the Jacksonville Humane Society has timed a special promotion perfectly around back-to-school season. From August 10 through August 14, noon to 7 p.m. each day, the shelter on Beach Boulevard is hosting a "name your price" adoption event called "Fetch an A+ Friend" — meaning you decide what you pay for your new pet, and every dollar goes toward the shelter's lifesaving care programs.

The event is designed to move dogs and cats into forever homes while freeing up space for animals still waiting in the community. JHS CEO Lawrence Nicolas noted the back-to-school timing is intentional, hoping families already in a shopping mindset might also consider welcoming a pet into the household.

Every animal available through the event arrives fully prepared for day-one homecoming: spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. Adopters should be aware that a few additional costs — such as the city's rabies licensing fee, a leash and collar, or a cat carrier — may apply depending on the pet.

Prospective adopters can browse available animals ahead of time on the Jacksonville Humane Society's website to find their match before heading to the shelter. The five-day window gives plenty of opportunity to visit during the extended midday-to-evening hours.
